The problem with reviewing a Alexis Hall book is that he has set a very high standard with his previous work. If you've read For Real, Glitterland, Pansies, or Waiting for the Flood you know the bar is high. So, do you review the Billionaire trilogy as compared to those books or as compared to romances in general? If I were rating this book on an Alexis Hall scale I would give it three stars. Compared to other romances I'd give it five stars, so I averaged.My biggest problem with this book is that Caspian is an idiot. Or he's a jerk. Or both. Arden knows this about Caspian but he still thinks he's the best thing ever, which wears pretty thin as he's hurt by Caspian over and over. Caspian may not be able to be objective about how he feels about himself but he should be able to see what he's doing to others. Yes, Caspian was there for Ardy at a very crucial time in his life and helped him transition to adulthood. Showed him his value. Convinced him to pursue his dream. Those were lovely things and made the first two books enjoyable reads. But this book is a series of incidents of Caspian re-opening the wound of their break up and rubbing salt in it. And Arden keeps letting it happen, which makes you question Arden's self-preservation instincts at the very least.There is a very long scene in the book about a dinner involving Arden, Caspian, and Nathaniel. There is no way any of these characters should have agreed to this dinner; it's one of the most implausible things I've ever read. But, it was amazing to read. You had to just say,'Ok, I'm gonna ride this crazy train' and then sit back and enjoy. Nathaniel was about 'I'm the winner you must acknowledge me as the one true victor' even as he knew only he felt that way. Caspian was trying to convince Arden that he was doing the right thing when it was so clear that he was only making everyone miserable. And Arden, dodging Nathaniel's sarcasm and Caspian's hubris while still acknowledging that Nathaniel put on a really great feast. The whole scene was a masterpiece, even if you didn't like what the characters were doing.By the end of the book I was more convinced than ever that Arden was too good for Caspian--the one thing Caspian believed that I agreed with. Ardy, though, still loved him and Ardy was the star of the show so I was Ok with being happy for him.
