This book was written by two women who healthfully lost a significant amount of weight and have kept it off. It seems to be written with women in mind, however I believe the content is quite useful for men as well (like me).I've dieted and regained weight multiple times. I know exactly what is healthy and what isn't. I know exactly why obesity is dangerous. None of that is important if I go against my strongest willpower and continue to crave and eat junk. This is the most important part of this book, it goes into great detail about the emotional side of eating. What good is learning about calorie restriction, hormonal sleep patterns, exercise, etc., if you constantly feel deprived and your brain is working against you?This book differs from other diet books because it focuses on the emotional reasons for overeating. Towards the end of the book the authors describe this in detail and I found this to be the most important and unique part of the book. Janice admits to stop eating processed and sugary foods she had to stop completely. Intuitive eating didn't work for them, it's very unlikely or impossible to eat processed foods in moderation, as they say "it is sensible (advice), but may not be achievable". This concept is what most diets, diet books and medical advice fail to grasp.I empathize with the authors -- my intuition regarding how full I am just doesn't work with the staples that are in the American diet. I wish I learned this about myself 20 years ago. Just like the authors, I can't interpret my own hunger cues. A wholesome, mostly plant based diet makes the interpretation somewhat easier, but I must be mindful always if I want to maintain a healthy weight. Such simple advice yet neglected by diet books which gloss over our mind, thought and fears and constantly tell us which foods are healthy and why obesity is dangerous. No s*#t, Shirlock.If you have struggled to find "middle ground" with maintaining a healthy weight this book may be for you.
