The Monuments Men Murders is the fourth in the Art of Murder series, following the developing relationship between FBI agents Jason West (of the Art Crime Team) and Sam Kennedy (of the BAU) and it is a wonderful continuation! In this story, Jason and Sam find themselves in the rare circumstance of both being in the same place at the same time - Montana - as Sam wraps up a taskforce while Jason investigates the possible existence of paintings looted by an American GI during WWII. Both look forward to sharing a few nights together in the same hotel room, for once. Jason’s case forms the entirety of the mystery plot and is one of the reasons this book is possibly my favorite in the series. There’s lots of discussion of history and art - in particular, beautiful descriptions and background on Vermeer, which I really enjoyed, and the case had a satisfying arc for the length of the book.The real sell here, though, of course, is the building relationship between Jason and Sam. Jason is in a vulnerable place - under threat from a stalker - and the case involves his grandfather’s legacy - so it’s not a surprise that the emotional stakes feel especially high in this one. I loved seeing both how far they have come - in the level of certainty in their feelings for each other - and how far they have to go - in figuring out what it actually means to be in and stay in this relationship. Both men make frustrating mistakes and choices that will surely have a lot of resonance for the series going forward.This is not the place to jump into this series (which should definitely be read in order), as the continuing threat of Jeremy Keyser looms in the background, and a lot of the relationship tensions build (very satisfyingly) on the ground laid in Magician Murders (book 3). It’s a quick read - about the same length as book 3 - and I downed it in a matter of hours. I’m now very eagerly awaiting book 5 in early 2020!No content warnings necessary for this one, beyond the level of emotional angst and crime-book violence typical for this author, series, and genre.5 stars!
